da gbg bet: Lyon are interested in signing Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney this summer, according to French outlet Soccerlink.
What’s the story?
The Hoops defender has been a stand-out at the club for a number of seasons and is regarded as one of the best Scottish players around right now.
Lyon of course have a history of signing Celtic talent, making a record-breaking move for Moussa Demebele last summer, with the striker going on to have a successful debut season in Ligue 1.
How does Neil Lennon turn his doubters into believers? The answer lies in the video below…
Soccerlink reckon that the French giants have been scouting Tierney for three years and have even made contact with his representatives about a potential move, a sign that their interest is serious and at an advanced stage.
It’s the kind of news Celtic fans don’t want to hear ahead of the summer, with the 21-year-old eternally popular among supporters of his boyhood club.
Does selling him now make sense?
The reality is that one day Celtic are likely to cash in on the talent Tierney has, it’s just part of the way they work with young players who have exceptional ability.
However, when that day comes it must be a logical decision and not one made to cash in before the Scotland international reaches his peak value or when the club really need him in the squad.
This summer is the worst time possible to sell the player for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, he is coming off the back of a disappointing 2018/19 season during which he has had fitness and injury concerns. He’s not hit the kind of form that would drive up his price and in fact, last term was arguably his worst in a Celtic shirt so far.
Secondly, Celtic are chasing historic glory next season in their quest for a ninth title in a row. Retaining Tierney is going to be absolutely crucial to that, especially when there aren’t great options at left-back in support.
Lyon’s interest in the player may be strong this summer, it certainly is according to Soccerlink, but Celtic simply can’t afford to bite on any potential offers when he still has so much to give and could fetch a higher price in transfer windows to follow.
