da bwin: Former Arsenal attacker Robert Pires has insisted that he is “positive” ahead of the new campaign, and has backed the Gunners to challenge for major silverware in the 2017-18 season.
da wazamba: Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League table last season as they missed the cut in the Champions League, but head coach Arsene Wenger did land another FA Cup as the London club finished the campaign on a high.
It is expected to be a busy transfer market for Wenger as the Frenchman looks to put together a squad capable of competing for silverware next term, although there remain question marks over the futures of key duo Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
Pires, however, has claimed that he ‘believes in the team and the squad’, and has backed Wenger’s side to challenge for the Premier League title in the new campaign.
Pires told Arsenal Player:
“Of course Wenger is as hungry as ever. It’s most important for him. He’s very disappointed [to have missed out on] the Champions League last season, because when he works it’s always to win something.
“He won the FA Cup, but I think for the new season we need to forget the Champions League. I am positive, I believe in this team, I believe in this squad. The first objective is to win the Premier League.”
Pires, 43, landed two Premier League titles during his time with Arsenal, and also reached the 2006 Champions League final in a six-year spell with the London giants.
It is now 13 years since Arsenal last landed the Premier League crown, however, and they face a fight with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United for domestic silverware in the new campaign.
