Liverpool have reaffirmed their unwillingness to do business with Real Madrid – or any other potential suitors – this summer over the sale of Mo Salah, according to the Daily Mail.
That is sure to be music to the ears of Reds fans, who will be looking for their team to strengthen this summer, not sell their best player to undermine their progress – just as they did by letting Luis Suarez join Barcelona after the 2013/14 campaign.
What’s the story, then?
The report states that Madrid are looking to overhaul their squad this summer – despite being on the cusp of a third consecutive Champions League final and that Salah is on their list.
It goes on to say that, while it would force them to reconsider their long-term plan to sign Neymar, the Egyptian international is of interest, but Liverpool have said he is not for sale and have not wavered on that.
It also reveals that even £200m would not secure Salah’s signature; they want to keep the side Jurgen Klopp has built together and build on it next summer.
Salah must not be the next Suarez
After Liverpool’s brush with the title in 2013/14, Suarez departed but it was thought that the blow would be softened by having Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge around; in the same way that the front three all function now.
As well-oiled as Liverpool are and as well as they have absorbed the January departure of Philippe Coutinho, Salah is central to everything they do.
It would not be a simple case of finding a replacement if he does go, or taking £100m and running with it to rebuild the squad.
Salah has to stay and Liverpool can’t make the mistake they did with Suarez. Reds fans will be so encouraged by their club’s desire to stick to their stance.
